Greenville Evening Empty Greenville Evening

That hill I ran over with my bare feet,
Reveling in the softness of the grass,
A boy army-crawled downhill,
And the girls I walked with laughed at him,
But I knew that he wasn’t just on a hill,
He was sneaking under gunfire through No Man’s Land,
Snaking through the jungle avoiding pumas and jaguars,
Sliding under the smoke in a burning house,
Dragging himself across a desert,
And for a moment I wished I could join him.
The girl who walked up
And adored us for our school,
And we knew what it meant to be famous,
If only for a moment.
The painter, observing his palette,
His canvas reflecting his eyes,
Brush in hand as he scanned the plaza,
Seeking inspiration in the fountains,
And the balloon animal man dressed like a pirate,
And the eleven men in button-down shirts who carried Michelin bags.
Night fell, a dark drape seeping across the sky.
At the end of the day, we’re all people.
It’s in the morning,
When you wake up and decide if you want to be human or monster.
